About Me: Here is a short introduction of me! I hope you take a minute just to read who I am and how excited I am to be supervising you this semester.

It’s a challenging time in our world right now and, as educators, we feel additional pressure, often torn between what’s best for our families, ourselves and our students. But remember…

A teacher is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water. (with apologies to Eleanor Roosevelt, who actually said this about women!)

It is all going to fall into place and work out...there may be a few bumps along the way, and a different way of doing some things, but please always remember that Salem State University faculty, staff, administrators, and supervisors all have the same goal: for you to complete a successful practicum, and for you to enjoy every minute of teaching and learning from your cooperating teachers and students in whatever format that may be! (Having said that, I'm a mom and a grandmother of five, and I've gotten really good at "virtual hugs"!) This is the fun part...the cumulation of everything you have been studying and working for! Enjoy every minute, take notes & photos, ask questions, be sure to take initiative and get involved in the school community. Remember that you are required to "live the life of a teacher" so you are expected to keep the same hours, attend the same meetings and after school events, etc. However that may look! 🙃

My responsibility is to help you complete a successful practicum, so please remember that the only "stupid questions" are the ones you don't ask. Use me as a resource, I worked in a school district for over 40 years in several different capacities, as an educator and administrator. Working in higher education requires that I stay current with research based instruction and best practices in educational pedagogy. And, if I don't know the answer, I know how to find it!

All of the 'Candidate Assessment of Performance' information, guidelines, and forms can be found under "Files" and "Modules". It is your responsibility to access the necessary forms and to be certain that your Supervising Practitioner has all of the forms he/she needs. The SSU Practicum Handbook and the DESE CAP Guidelines are linked below, as well as a list of CAP & SSU forms that I am responsible for submitting to SIBME, the online platform that SSU is using. I'm going to send the link for this course to your Supervising Practitioners so that they will also have access.

The following chart is a Timeline of Required Forms to be submitted - estimates of when forms are due are listed, and specific dates will be set at our Virtual Introductory Three-Way Meeting.

Also, please make a habit of checking "Announcements" for any updates, etc. In fact, there is an Announcement posted with a link to a Practicum Information Form, so please just click and complete that, and return it to me asap: lleonard@salemstate.edu

I'm looking forward to working with you this semester...we'll do a brief "Hello" Zoom just before the practicum starts and then we'll plan an Intro Meeting with your Supervising Practitioner following our meeting.
