Course Description: MUS 160 1 Credit. This mixed vocal ensemble rehearses and performs a variety of repertoire for SATB voices. Open and welcome to all students. No audition required. 150 minutes of rehearsal each week with performances each semester. Extra evening hours and a gender non-specific dress code are required for performances. May be used to satisfy an ensemble credit for music majors and music minors. Course may be repeated for credit.
Course Goals: This course will 1) help the student understand and appreciate the basic fundamentals of traditional choral singing within a large ensemble. 2) introduce the student to a variety of choral repertoire 3) help build each student’s individual musicianship and creative expression. No prior singing experience is required, but all students must be able to meet basic singing proficiency requirements of matching pitch and rhythm.
Learning Objectives: The student will 1) learn and experience the fundamentals of healthy based singing 2) understand the individual singer’s contribution to a choral group. 3) experience a variety of choral music styles and genres through selected repertoire. 4) increase the student’s overall musicianship and mastery of skills including, but not limited to, sight reading, articulation, dynamics, phrasing, interpretation, and listening.
Course Activities/Requirements:
- Daily participation in vocal warm-ups and repertoire rehearsal (see Attendance Policy below)
- Encouragement of healthy voice practices such as rest, hydration, and proper vocal technique
- Participation in music reading activities and class discussions (including online)
- CANCELLED Concert #1 Tuesday, April 28, 7:30 PM (6:30 call) and #2 Thursday, April 16, 7:30 (6:30 call) PM (see Attendance Policy below)
- Open, positive attitude in class and good work ethic
- Bring music and pencil to every class
- Anyone using social media or texting during class will be marked absent.
- Respond to emails from Professor Shane with in 24 hours.
- Students will be contacted via email or Canvas regarding changes to assignments or course information.
Grading:
Class and Concert Attendance, Preparation, and Participation 100%
Attendance Policy: Class attendance is required and will be recorded. Anyone with more than two class absences or tardies will be marked down. Students using social media or texting during class will be marked absent. Absences and tardies include ALL absences, even those that have been pre-arranged or excused. Concert attendance is required. Anyone missing a concert will be marked down two letter grades from the total if the absence is pre-arranged or excused. Anyone missing a concert without pre-arrangement or sufficient excuse will be issued a final grade of F.
Makeup and Late Work Policy: There are no make up exams or assignments for this class.
Concert Dress: Concert dress is conservative black attire including floor length black pants or skirt, black shoes, black shirt (3/4 length sleeve or longer).
