Starting a new job can feel exciting and a little overwhelming. Taking care of a few details before your first day can help you arrive prepared, confident, and ready to make a strong first impression.

What to Sort Out Before Day One

Before your first day, make sure you have the basics covered:

Confirm Your Start Time

Don't assume you know when to arrive. Double-check:

Your official start time
Whether you should arrive early
Where you should report when you arrive

Understand Dress Expectations

Workplace attire varies widely from one organization to another. If you're unsure:

Review any information provided by your employer
Ask your supervisor or HR contact
Consider the organization's culture and environment

Know What to Bring

Depending on the position, you may need:

Identification documents
Employment paperwork
Direct deposit information
A notebook and pen
Any required equipment or materials

Know Who to Contact

Save the contact information for:

Your supervisor
Human Resources representative
Any onboarding coordinator or point person

If something changes or you have questions before your first day, you'll know exactly who to reach out to.

Professional Appearance: Focus on Fit, Not Cost

Professional appearance is not about wearing expensive clothing or having a perfect wardrobe. It's about dressing appropriately for your workplace and presenting yourself in a way that aligns with the organization's culture.

Observe Before You Invest

During your first week:

Pay attention to what colleagues and supervisors wear
Notice differences between departments and roles
Look for patterns rather than focusing on individual exceptions

You may find that your workplace is more formal, more casual, or somewhere in between than you expected.

Aim for Consistency

Your appearance should communicate that you understand and respect the workplace environment. As you learn more about the culture, adjust accordingly while remaining authentic and comfortable.

Tip: When in doubt, it is usually better to be slightly more professional on your first day and adapt from there.

Professional Communication Starts on Day One

The communication skills that helped you during your job search are just as important once you're hired.

Use Clear Email Subject Lines

Help others understand your message quickly.

Examples:

New Hire Question About First Day
Schedule Clarification for September 15
Follow-Up on Onboarding Documents

Start with a Professional Greeting

Use a respectful opening, such as:

Hello Taylor,
Good Morning Dr. Smith,
Hi Jordan,

Avoid sending messages without a greeting or jumping directly into your request.

Proofread Before Sending

Take a moment to review:

Spelling and grammar
Names and titles
Dates and times
Attachments

A quick proofread can help prevent confusion and demonstrate attention to detail.

Respond Promptly

Part of professional communication is being reliable. Check your email regularly and respond within a reasonable timeframe, even if it's simply to acknowledge that you received a message.

Remember

Your first day is not about being perfect. It's about showing up prepared, professional, and ready to learn.

By confirming the details ahead of time, paying attention to workplace norms, and communicating professionally, you'll start building a positive reputation from day one.
