11-6-14 Opportunity to revise Assignment #2

I hope you are all well. I would like to give you all the opportunity to revise Assignment #2. I usually do not make room for revisions, but as many (but not all) in the class did not include all intervention studies in their annotated bibliographies, I am going to allow for this opportunity.

This assignment was to focus on research about the question that is guiding your project - "What is the best available evidence to support (unit of service delivery) with (population)? This means that you were to focus on research about social work practice - not social research. This was discussed numerous times in class both in conversations about the assignment and in conversations about how the assignments follow the process of evidence-based practice. If you will recall the three circles diagram that we look at in class, you will recall that one of those circles includes a review of the evidence around an element of social work practice. That is what this annotated bibliography was part of. I asked you to contact me if you felt you did not have enough intervention research to complete the assignment, so that we could come up with what the "best available evidence" would be. Only four of you did so.

So, while I felt that the assignment was clear, and while students have never been unclear about this assignment in past classes, the fact that a majority of you had a problem in this regard has led me to my decision to allow for a revision!

You will need to re-write the assignment by 11/20/14 and send it to me via Canvas. I will not accept any extensions on this due date. This is an optional activity. If you choose to revise your assignment, I will average the original grade with the new grade for a new grade on this assignment.

1) Do your readings, per the syllabus

2) Listen to the narrated lecture, which you can find in "Files" or here: Slayter - SWK 707 - Fall 2014 - W8 - Narrated.pptx

3) Critique one measurement in a quantitative article that was part of your annotated bibliography - and post your critique on Canvas (see discussion board).

4) Email me with any administrative matters or questions!

Hello all,

I hope you are all well today.

OK - our materials for the online session are ready. You need to do this work between 10/3/14 and 10/13/14 at 9 a.m. Here is what you need to do:

First, do your readings. Instead of "coming to class ready to discuss" the literature review sections in the two empirical articles for the week as described in the syllabus, try to map out the "theme" areas in each of the article's literature review sections. This is modeling for what you will need to do for your annotated bibliography - and your eventual literature review.

Second, listen to the narrated lecture notes for W5 in which I give my "lecture" in audio format. I have also included non-narrated notes in case that is helpful to you. Slayter - SWK 707 - Fall 2014 - W5 - Narrated.pptx

Third, follow the instructions given in the lecture about the required online activities for the online session....see below...

Fourth, on the Assignment #1 discussion board, post a comment in response to my question listed there...you will be talking about your experience with the first assignment. You must also post a substantive answer to at least one other person's comment.Discussion on Assignment #1

Sixth, on the "Annotated Bibliography" discussion board, please follow the instructions.Developing an outline for your annotated bibliography...

Seventh, email me two empirical articles that relate to your project and that will be included in your Assignment #2.
